In Jiu-Jitsu Unleashed, Bravo blames the stalemates on over-dependence on gi-based techniques which require a sleeve, collar, or pants leg to grab to initiate a submission or sweep. In his book Bravo advocates "throwing out the gi" from the start for MMA and submission grappling fighters. In a September 2006 seminar (San Carlos, California), Eddie described this style of no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style as "Greco-Roman jiu-jitsu" due to its introduction of clinches, hooks, and head controls - drawn from wrestling - that don't rely on the gi to get and hold a grip. At the same time, Bravo modified the traditional guard and half guard positions and attacks, calling his new no-gi guard position the Rubber Guard in reference to the high degree of flexibility required to apply it.
It is interesting to note that Shinya Aoki won at PRIDE Shockwave 2006 by a gogoplata choke from the Rubber Guard. A few months later, Nick Diaz successfully executed a similar technique at Pride 33.
At the September 2006 seminar, he complained that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players are a little addicted to free sparring and often view "boring drills" as a distraction from the adrenaline high of rolling. He stated that any serious practitioner needs to spend at least an hour per week drilling essential moves so they become as natural as tying a shoelace, which is a lot harder than it looks if you were to break it down into moves.
In his book Mastering the Rubber Guard, Bravo includes a lengthy section crediting marijuana for stimulating creativity in both his music and jiu-jitsu. He states a strong support of Jack Herer's work and ideas on marijuana and advocates the legalization of marijuana. He says that it does not make us happy or sad but only what we want it to, and that it was not originally banned for health reasons but to stop the hemp trade. He thinks some plants "nourish our souls."[1]

"I grew up in the ghetto part of the OC, Santa Ana, producing music since the age of 10. I started out playing drums but that was only because all my friends already had guitars. I really wanted to rock the guitar but I was the poorest of all my friends and the last to buy an instrument, so I was stuck being in the background bangin on the drums. "

"I needed to figure out what I could do to keep myself from being a fat pig on stage. So I decided to give the martial arts a try. After all, I thought to myself, I was always a huge Bruce Lee fan so maybe there was a chance I wouldn’t get bored of punching and kicking shit. Well I ended up doing karate and it worked out great and I immediately became a martial arts fanatic. Now there was little chance that I would end up like fat Elvis, my life became a perfect balance of music and martial arts. I was on the fast track to my green belt when I saw the UFC for the first time and was introduced to Brazilian jiu jitsu in devastating fashion. UFC legend Royce Gracie destroyed everyone of all styles in a cage on pay per view with amazing jiu jitsu techniques, even my precious karate representatives went down in flames by the hands of Royce. Initially I was crushed by the complete destruction of my karate heroes but eventually I wised up, jumped ship and joined my local jiu jitsu academy to learn this wicked art of strangulation and joint destruction. A jiu jitsu maniac was born."

Mastering the Rubber Guard DVD Series

See what a Student says here: Mastering The Rubber Guard DVD Set
Ok, I have to correct myself. Above I said that Eddie's book Mastering the Rubber Guard was the best source to learn some of his innovative techniques.
Well, I recently saw his DVD set of the same name and I have to say that it is a must have if you are serious about learning the Rubber Guard. The book accompanied by the DVD set is the best way to learn Eddie's system.
It's like you're right there at 10th Planet learning in class. The only difference is that Eddie usually cracks more jokes while he is teaching. But you will get a sense of his humor with some of the extras in the DVD that I will let you see for yourself when you get the set.
To fully understand how some of the techniques are done you need to get Mastering the Rubber Guard DVD set!!! Read More.
